This extraordinary display of products manufactured by the Colt Plastics Division beginning in the early 1920-1950s, won 3 awards during the Ohio Gun Collectors May 2015 show including: (1) Robert Rubendunst Best Educational Award, (2) 1st Place Modern Division, and (3) Best 1st Time Displayer Award. It also won the following awards during the 2013 Colt Collector's Association show in Norman, Oklahoma: (1) Most Educational Award, (2) Best in Memorabilia Award. The Colt Plastics Division began in the early 1920's as part of Colts Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company out of Hartford, Connecticut. Colt's first "plastics" were molded using heat and compression, or thermosetting. With Bakelite being very prevalent thermosetting compound used during the time period, Colt decided to produce their own version. "Coltrock", made of phenol-formaldehyde, was the name assigned to this new material by then-president Samuel Stone. Many of the early products made of Coltrock were used as smoking accessories and electrical components due to their ability to withstand high temperatures. Some examples of such items include "Pipe-A-Dor", "Lady Nicotine", "Jarette", and "Foursome" to name a few. As technology and materials used evolved, Coltrock was discontinued in approximately 1936. Where Coltrock and thermosetting left off, more modern plastic compounds and injection molding took over. A very successful line of cosmetic jars and vanity accessories were composed of urea-formaldehyde. Eyecups, radio knobs, buttons, lids, and many other products were included in Colt's lineup. In addition, Colt manufactured "cosmetic jewelry" gemstones using methyl methacrylate and ethyl cellulose called "Coltstones". Colt's Plastic Division was sold in 1955 to Penn Texas Corporation and in 1959 to Bentley Plastics Company, the company remains in business today. This remarkable collection contains over 100 pieces of all the described products, including an only known jewelry box. Also included are 2 Colt manufactured adding machines private labeled for Standard Federal. A number of important Colt archival drawings and other documents are included. The entire collection is being offered as 1 lot. CONDITION: Excellent overall with all original artifacts in undamaged fine or better condition. A most unique collection and unique opportunity to acquire an important piece of Colt Manufacturing history. MKS
