Remington rolling block rifle fitted with the extremely rare Dodge patent breechblock. The Dodge improved breechblock was designed to not let the hammer strike until the breech block is fully closed and the breechblock lever is fully forward. Additionally, this design was to make the breechblock safer by physically drawing back the firing pin each time the breechblock is pulled rearward to prevent firing pin sticking, which caused many accidental discharges during the single-shot era. 35" round barrel chambered in .43 Spanish with Spanish rolling block rear sight and blade front. Type 2 Remington blackpowder "Number 1" action. 2 piece plain walnut stock and forearm with 3 iron barrel bands featuring the Spanish crown, iron nosecap, and iron military buttplate. Typical of examples seen with the Dodge breechblock, the action is unmarked. Left side of forearm is marked with inventory number "1713" and Remington assembly numbers "10937" and 11280" can be found on top and bottom tangs under stockline. Complete with a Firearms Collection Catalog of the United States Cartridge Company, from the turn of the 20th century era featuring this rifle as figure 272 on page 71. CONDITON: Excellent for its age with scattered handling and storage marks and metal assemblies covered in a thick protective layer of a grease that has turned yellow but still appears to be bright underneath. Stock and forearm are excellent, with age related darkening throughout and no discernible cracks or signs of major distress. Action is tight and crisp. Bore is bright with crisp rifling. A high condition example of an extremely rare Remington Rolling Block. PROVENANCE: Ex-United States Cartridge Company Collection. TON
