Springfield 1873 Trapdoor Carbine single shot rifle in .45-70. Made 1881. Breech block is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873". Barrel has "V/P/(eagles head)/P" proofs on the chamber. Standard markings on the right side of the lock. No cartouche on the left side of the stock. "U" marked behind the tang. "C" marked Buffington rear sight added later. Standard blade front sight. Original military blued finish on the metal components. Saddle ring bar and ring still present. Stock has a light oil finish. Metal butt plate with carbine sliding trapdoor slot for cleaning kit. CONDITION: Metal retains little of its original finish with most areas forming a gray patina. Stock has handling marks, dings and scratches. Bore is clean overall with a small pit near the muzzle. Very good overall rifling. Hammer is tight. Mechanically fine. JWA
