Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor carbine single shot rifle. Made 1878. Standard markings on the right side of the lock. "V/P/(Eagles Head)" proofs on the chamber. Breech block is marked "Model/1873/(eagles head)/US". "C" marked on the left side of the sight base, and on the top of the ladder. No visible cartouche on the stock, but the butt plate is marked "U.S" on the top. Standard blade front sight and rear adjustable to 1,500 yards. Finish was lightly re-done at some point. Saddle ring bar and ring are present. Oil finished wood stock has arsenal repairs on the left side of the wrist. Correct carbine butt plate with trapdoor. Includes original three piece cleaning rod set in the butt. CONDITION: Metal retains 60% of its re-applied finish with most areas forming a grayish patina. Stock has handling marks, dings and scratches. Small crack in front of the saddle ring bar. Bore has frosting in the grooves, with good overall rifling. Hammer is tight. Mechanically fine. JWA
