This is a short, double twist bugle following the 1850s British fashion and bears an oval maker's tag above the bell reading, " NORTON'S PATENT IMPROVd. FIELD BUGLE FOR INFy. CAVy. & ARTILLERY 5th & MINOR ST. PHILADA." A number of these bugles, in copper and brass or German silver, have been observed with engraving to a Civil War unit or provenance to a Civil War veteran. There is debate over the date of the patent and whether it refers to John T. Norton, a British trumpet master who taught at the Royal Academy of Music before emigrating the U.S. and Philadelphia about 1827 and listed there in 1850 as a Professor of Music, age 55, or to a C.H. Norton. CONDITION: Fair. Considerable battering, loss of the garland, and crude solder repairs, but has the maker's plaque in place and has a faded hat cord with acorn ends, of twisted black (now brown) and gold bullion strands, which suggests a G.A.R. connection.
