This is the early style Indian War clothing bag or haversack with fixed web shoulder strap using a Chambers buckle. The fastening tab and billet holding the buckle are leather. The mess tin pouch is secured by a Civil War general service eagle button. The interior of the flap is stamped U.S. / Watervliet Arsenal. The exterior canvas flap has a bound edge and has been rubberized with a white painted stencil applied reading "U.S." over "Recruit" in an oval. The intention behind recruit gear was to provide for men between the recruiting depot and their regimental or post assignments with field commanders supposed to return the gear for reissue, which did not happen regularly. CONDITION: Very good. Upper right corner of flap at fold shows an old mouse chew. Scattered stains. Finish loss to leather. Small wear hole at bottom of bag. Wear to rubberized edge binding. Solid overall.
