1890: FRENCH: A spectacular musical automaton depicting what appears to be the "Crystal Palace". Originally built in 1851 in Hyde Park, London to house the "Great Exhibition". Three-dimensional diorama painting with die-cut horses and jockeys in the foreground. Beautiful gilded flower vine encircling a Revel clock with near perfect porcelain dial. When operating, the horses move across the track as the music box plays. Requiring three keys, one for the music box, one for the horse mechanism, and one for the clock. Music box is swiss made and unmarked, playing two tunes. CONSIDERATIONS: The overall automaton is in excellent condition, great bright color and vivid detail to both the die-cut horses and the racetrack background. The wood case cabinet is well constructed and very solid. Both the music box and the horse race motion are working. The Revel clock runs and has the original pendulum. This is a substantial piece of music automata, with a great gambling and horse race theme.
