Zlatoust is well known for being one of the foremost centers of Russian engraving and metalwork, with production as far back as 1815, when Zlatoust was manufacturing edged weapons, including decorated examples. This modern example is a hunting knife with a Damascus clip point blade, decorated on right side with a leopard mid-battle with a python, with clever use of blackening and white enamel to accentuate the leopard. Right side of blade with a short spray of florals on ricasso. Sheath, bolster, backstrap, and pommel with extensive floral decoration on a mixed silver and gilt ground, with left side depicting a leopard striking an antelope. Burl walnut grip with finger groove. Pommel with ball capstan. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining virtually all of the factory finishes, with some very minor marks from sheathing/resheathing. Housed in a wooden presentation case fitted to knife and paper slipcase. Accompanied by Russian Compliance paperwork and a brief description of the knife in Cyrillic. A lovely piece of Russian art. EMW. A portion of the proceeds for this lot will be donated to Samaritan’s Purse in support of Ukraine.
