Circa 1955. A West German made break open rifle with a blued octagon to round steel barrel that is crowned at the muzzle and chambered for the 7x57R cartridge. The barrel is fit with a machine cut matted quarter rib that reads "7x57R", sling swivel and claw mount bases fit with a vintage Nickel-Zielfernrohre Marburg/l. 4x32 E/S scope that is marked on the top "KURT JÄGER-MAINZ"; it is the experts opinion that this is the name of the gunsmith whom installed the claw mounts onto the rifle - he is the brother to the famous gunmaker Paul Jäger. Right side of the barrel in script reads "Stahl Bochumer Verein" while the left side of barrel is marked "J.P. SAUER & SON A.G.E MADE IN GERMANY". Bottom of barrel with serial number "70551" and appropriate German proof marks from the Kiel proof house. The coin finish scalloped action body is border scroll engraved with "J.P. SAUER & SOHN" on both the left and right sides, top of the action body is matted, bottom of the action body has the famous J.P. Sauer "Cave Man" trademark surrounded by "ORIGINAL SAUER" and scrolls, and the blued top lever is checkered on the left side of thumbpiece. Boxlock action is fit with a single Kersten lock on right side with crossbolt and non-automatic safety with the letter "S" just forward of the serrated safety slide and a blued trigger guard protecting the double-set triggers. The pistol hand gripped reddish-orange European walnut stock has 2 panel point pattern checkering, hard rubber grip cap, pancake cheekpiece, a thin brown Pachmayr "White Line" rubber recoil pad and sling swivel. The checkered forearm has a schnabel tip and Deeley style lever release. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels has handling/use marks and retains 80% blue, rifling is good and bore is bright and shiny. Stock and forearm both have use and storage marks. Trigger is crisp and the barrel is slightly loose on face. (CP)
