Rare Springfield Model 1870 Carbine and possibly 1 of 20 built for sale in Texas to officers according to the consignor. Correct 22" round 3-groove .50 caliber rifled barrel with replaced brass blade in pinned front sight which measures the correct distance from the end of the barrel. Correct style rear flip sight with barrel not having any markings or serial numbers. Correct high arch breech block with correct measurements and extended angle. Breech block marked with 1870 date, Eagle over arrows, and U.S. markings. Correct 2-position lock dated 1864 and having Eagle over U.S. Springfield markings with single trigger control. Walnut short comb stock with long tang and "E.S.A." cartouche along with another illegible cartouche. Stock has 1 barrel band and no provisions for sling swivels and has ramrod channel plugged a long time ago with correct slide bar and saddle ring. CONDITION: Metal has been polished with some pitting still showing. Dark bore with good mechanics. Stock has original appearance with maybe being a cutdown period replacement. Gun appears to be mostly correct with some questionable later added parts. DLM
