Federal period circa 1820s-1840s Eagle Pommel saber with leather scabbard. Swords like this were carried in the Seminole and Mexican War and even up to the Civil War. The sword features a 29 - 1/2" straight blade, decorated for about half its length with a fire blued panel. The panel is complimented by engraved military, patriotic, and foliate motifs that are highlighted with gilt. The decorations feature flowering vines, followed by a panoply of arms, and foliate scrolls just above the ricasso. The sword is marked "S&K" for Schnitzler and Kirschbaum, which is etched in a foliate banner on the obverse ricasso. The hilt features a brass crossguard and knucklebow, which leads to a screaming eagle open beak pommel, ending in a half feathered backstrap. The backstrap leads to a plain ferrule and is flanked by 2 languets, 1 contains a spread winged Federal Eagle facing proper right with a US shield protecting its chest. To the opposite side of the knucklebow is a clamshell quillon. Resting between the pommel and guard is a grooved 1-piece ivory grip. The sword is complete with its black leather scabbard. The scabbard features brass mounts with 2 carry rings. The mounts are devoid of decoration. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a dark gray patina and retains some of the fire blued finish on the panels. The decorations remain mostly unmolested and exhibit finish loss. Minor edge wear. Brass components of the hilt exhibit a pleasant, untouched, dark patina. Guard is loose and produces a wiggle when handled. The scabbard remains firm with one significant bend towards the upper mount. Tight seam with areas of separation. Mounts exhibit matching patina to the hilt. Middle mount shifts slightly. Overall good. JLD
