Both pistols manufactured as a true pair with identical features including blade front sight on barrel, notch rear sight on tang. Octagonal barrels with browned finish and inlaid with gold florals and "CANON A RUBANS", indicating that the barrel was manufactured by using ribbons of steel. Microgroove rifling. Hooked breeches. Underside of barrels are marked "Berau G1", "A Ruban", "30" and an unidentified proofmark that resembles a French St. Etienne proof with laurels reversed. Unclear if this is a French proof or a possible Belgian attempt to duplicate it. Lock, unsigned, with floral engravings, cock decorated en suite. Trigger guard with spur, engraved with a standing bird (snipe?) and ornate floral finial. Octagonal buttcap. Lock, cock, breech, trigger guard, buttcap, and forearm cap are case colored and lacquered. Both guns with mating marks throughout several pieces, "99" and "9" for each respective pistol. Housed in a burl walnut case with brass tabs, and housing accessories comprising pair of cleaning/tool rods (1 with damaged threads), brush, wire mop, a small wooden jar, a powder flask, a key, turnscrew with trap in butt that has an ivory cap, combination bullet mold and snips, jag, and hammer. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrels retain the majority of their browning, with spotted oxidation throughout both barrels with gold lifting. Barrel "B" has a rub to silver on left side of barrel. Vivid case colors retained with some minor marks to the lacquer. Stocks are excellent, checkering somewhat crude, pistol "B" has a crack in stock that runs from lock to finial, approximately 1/2". Case is fair with lovely eye appeal but numerous cracks, chips, repairs, and missing escutcheon. Accessories are very good with sprue cutter retaining approximately 40-50% of the case coloring, nhandling marks throughout, mop somewhat crystallized. Powderflask a contemporary iteration and has lost the vast majority of its gilt, only retaining on the spout and in protected areas. Baize probably relined. EMW
