Lot consists of: (A) US Civil War M1860 Cutlass. Usually termed the Model 1860, this pattern has recently been documented to have been adopted, and deliveries started, in mid-1861. Standard form with brass cup hilt and leather wrapped grip. Binding wire is missing. Ames maker stamp is faintly visible on the reverse ricasso. Faint 1862 inspection stamp on obverse ricasso. Interior of guard serial numbered "7M702". CONDITION: The blade exhibits a dark gray patina with heavy pitting and significant edge wear. Grip exhibits cracks and leather loss. Brass cup guard exhibits dents. Overall poor. (B) Ames Model 1841 Naval Cutlass. The US Navy adopted a new cutlass in 1841 and contracted with Ames in late 1841 or early 1842 to supply 3,000 examples. This example is in standard configuration with brass hilts, impressed eagles on the pommel face and reverse, scaled grips secured with 3 rivets and flat knuckleguard extending from pommel, widening to form counterguard and ending with curved quillon and flat disc. The cutlass is marked "N.P. AMES / Springfield" on the obverse ricasso and "U.S.N. / 1843 / JCB" on the reverse ricasso. The quillon is marked "NWP" on the obverse and "WAT" on the reverse. Complete with its riveted seam scabbard. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a gray patina with scattered pitting, spotting, and edge wear. Hilt exhibits old polishing. Scabbard is missing the tip.
