US M1816 Transitional flintlock musket dated 1817 manufactured by Springfield Armory in original flint. 42" round barrel in .69 Smoothbore with German silver blade front sight on Charleville front barrel band and no provision for rear sight. Barrel is marked with "US" "N. CAROLINA" facing in opposite directions on top of barrel with "N.C." marking over frizzen and VP proof on left side of barrel above woodline. Lock is dated 1817 near tail behind cock with US Armory Eagle in front of cock. Full length trumpet head ramrod, possibly the original. Plain walnut low comb stock in 3 barrel band musket configuration with iron mountings and US marked military buttplate. Stock bears "JM" cartouche on left stock flat opposite lock. "GDM" stamp can be found on stock toe near buttplate indicating that this gun was part of the George D. Moller collection. Complete with socket bayonet that does not fit on to barrel and leather sling. CONDITON: Very good for its age, with iron assemblies turned a freckled brown-gray patina. Stock is very good with no major signs of distress and markings crisp. Action is tight and crisp. Bore is bright and smooth with moderate abrasion. Leather sling is very good with supple leather and tight stitching. Bayonet is very good. An early and attractive M1816 owned by one of the best known US Martial Arms authors and experts on the subject. TON
