Nicholas Clarke is recorded as working in Dublin between 1788 and 1811. Octagonal to round barrel, with wedding ring at girdle, raised reinforcement ring behind swamped muzzle, with an unusually well turned bell. Top flat of octagonal barrel marked "--DUBLIN--" and "F1549", an Irish registration marking for Fermanagh. Simple lock with bridled waterproof pan, swan neck cock, and simple engraved "CLARKE" in center of lock. Brass trumpet head ramrod retained by a single ferrule with flared mouth and feeding into a reinforced mouth. Plain brass trigger guard and buttplate, buttplate marked with "F1549" registration. CONDITION: Overall very good. Brass has a lovely deep golden mustard color, with ferrule missing a small chip at rear. Markings are crisp. Lock has even patination and is essentially a gunmetal grey throughout. Stock has been sanded and revarnished, with numerous bumps and bruises throughout, and one chip ahead of trigger guard. Mechanically fine, bore is excellent, with some verdigris. A good example of an Irish blunderbuss with a rarely seen registration area. EMW
