This is a very nice example of a Model 1832 Foot Artilleryman’s Short Sword that was produced by the Ames Manufacturing Company and bears the date 1841, which places this example in the years leading up to the Mexican American War. The artilleryman’s sword features a double-edged, steel spearpoint blade, and a solid brass hilt. The blade is marked "N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD" underneath a federal eagle on the obverse ricasso and "UNITED / STATES / 1841 / W.S." on the reverse ricasso. The crossguard is also marked with the initials of the arsenal inspector “W.S." as well as "MPL / ORD". The brass hilt is in the standard configuration, with the pommel bearing an eagle on either side and the grip with imitation scales, secured by 3 rivets. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a pleasant gray patina with scattered areas of spotting. The edges exhibit scattered nicks and indentations. The brass hilt exhibits a pleasing patina with handling wear. The bold eagle impressions make the pommel stand out. A nice example of an earlier dated M1832 Artillery Short Sword. Overall good. JLD
