Old Western style swell fork saddle circa 1920s with 14" seat. Maker stamped on rear of cantle: "J.H. WILSON SADDLERY CO. DENVER". James Hunter Wilson was a saddle and harness maker during the Civil War for the 2nd Illinois Cavalry. After the war he returned to Paxton, Illinois, and opened a saddle shop. He later moved to Denver, Colorado in 1876 and continued making saddles and his company grew to be quite large. Around 1920, the Western Saddle Mfg. Co. bought out the Wilson Saddlery and continued to use their famous J.H. Wilson name into the 1930s. This old style stock saddle was definitely made before then. Leather and tree are in good condition with and covered in basketweave hand tooled designs. CONDITION: Above average for a saddle 100 years old. Rigging is present with most latigos intact. The leather is a little stiff in toward the front of the skirts, and overall shows moderate field use. The sheep skin underneath is worn but very restorable. This saddle could be ridden with a little TLC if one desired or used as a display item in your cabin, ranch, or Western collectibles display. BRM.
