The Model 1840 cavalry saber, commonly referred to as the Model 1840 "Wristbreaker” was one of the most well used cavalry sabers by the United States mounted forces in the years leading up to, and throughout the Civil War. This particular example was produced by Horstmann, and is marked as such on the reverse ricasso. The marking is "HORSTMANN / PHILA" in small block letters. The saber is in standard M1840 configuration with its curved blade that features a wide single fuller and cast brass hilt with grooved wood grip wrapped in black leather. The saber is complete with its hefty iron scabbard which features 2 ring mounts and a drag. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a dark gray patina with areas of spotting as well as evidence of sharpening towards the tip. Light edge wear. Brass components of the hilt exhibit a pleasing untouched patina that is dark orange in some areas. Grip is missing most of its leather wrap as well as the brass wire. Scabbard exhibits a chocolate patina with areas of pitting. Attic condition. JLD
