Attractive example of a Federal Period circa 1820s-1830s "Tombstone" militia cap plate with a wonderful painted eagle. Constructed of tinned iron, the plate measures approximately 8" x 6" and features a gold border which surrounds a elegant gold federal eagle, perched on a globe underneath a cloud highlighted by vertical sun rays. The eagle on globe motif is usually associated with New York militia units, however this symbol is also associated with US dominance and could have been adopted by other militia units during this period. The reverse of the plate features metal loops which were soldered in place at each corner for attachment to a hat. There is also a larger metal loop located at the upper center for the accommodation of a plume. CONDITION: The plate exhibits small chips and dark age spots in several areas, mostly noticed around the edges. The paint exhibits areas of loss which do not detract from the overall appearance of the plate. The reverse exhibits tin loss but all retaining loops remain firmly in place. This is an excellent example of a federal period militia plate. Overall very good.
