This rifle dates to about 1820 and is signed "Leland", probably for Lemuel Leland (1786 - 1851). The Leland family of gunsmiths worked in Worchester County, Massachusetts. The heavy smoothbore octagon barrel has thick walls and is inscribed "Leland" just forward of the rear sight. The lockplate is marked "W/ KETLAND/ & Co" in the center. Double-set triggers. The brass furniture includes an attractive classic New England patchbox with engraved border on lid and profusely engraved finial. Engraved toeplate and oval escutcheon below rear lock bolt is engraved with a patriotic eagle. Triggerguard front tang features a long narrow protrusion. The engraved shield-shaped wrist escutcheon is surrounded by silver wire inlay that continues onto both side of the comb. Foliate silver wire inlay also surrounds the barrel tang. An engraved silver 8-pointed star is also engraved. Silver oval escutcheons surround the barrel keys on both sides, 6 in total. The stock is of figured maple. Complete with its original brass-tipped wooden ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel has been cleaned and retains a grey patina, signature is crisp. Lock retains a matching surface and is a professional reconversion. Brass polishes and showing some scattered marks. Stock retains its original surface and shows some scattered marks from use. A very nice signed New England rifle. DMG
