An interesting letter fro, Colonel Israel Angell to General Nathaniel Greene regarding a junior officer in the Continental Army. The letter is about Lieutenant William Littlefield, a member of Angell's regiment and of Greene's family. The letter states that Littlefield had a leave of 5 days but did not return to the regiment after his furlough was lengthened. The Colonel records possibilities of where Littlefield could be, and critiques him while expressing concern "that a strict compliance with discipline, ever was and ever will be the characteristick of a good officer, then it will be my duty to make some inquiry after him...". The letter was recorded on January 5, 1779 in Warren, Rhode Island. William Littlefield was an ensign in the 12th Continental Infantry from January 1-December 31, 1776 and was later an officer in the 2nd Rhode Island as of January 1, 1777. He was discharged on June 20, 1780. CONDITION: The letter exhibits yellowing with rough edges. Text remains legible with nice signature. A nice example of a Revolutionary War letter with most interesting content.
