A nice example of a Victorian era halberd in the Italian style. The halberd is a type of poleaxe that was used as a mainstay weapon for many armies over the course of several centuries. It was often utilized after its practical use as a weapon was outweighed by firearms for parade purposes and many were crafted in the Victorian era as display objects. This example is sand cast and made to represent an Italian halberd from the 16th century with a slender central spike, curved axe blade, and pierced decorations. A pair of iron straps, each secured with 3 misshapen rivets fix the head to the haft. The head measures approximately 28" with an overall length of approximately 94". CONDITION: The head exhibits a gray patina with scattered areas of freckling, pitting, and obvious casting flaws. Head remains secured to the haft which exhibits scattered dents throughout its length. The polearm would make an excellent display.
