Very nice U.S. Militia bell crown "tar bucket" shako. Used by regular forces as well as militia units from 1820-1835. This very original example has a portion of the front eagle insignia missing but majority remaining. Shako retains original bullion metallic silver thread braid, pressed leather rosette with star pattern militia button, silvered scalloped scales, and silver eagle side rosettes. Nice arched drop in the back adds a more dramatic look to the overall form. CONDITION: Overall shape is intact with nice arched drop back still holding its overall shape. Typical crazing and expected period commensurate wear to the tarred black finish over pressed leather. Polished cloth lining is absent, with a 3 - 1/2" older repair to the sweatband, which is around 70% intact. Missing the ostrich plume but hole is present. 95% original green paint under the visor, height approximately 7 - 3/4". BRM.
