Built circa 1866 from left over Model 1863 percussion muskets using Erskine Allin's trapdoor breechloading conversion. The original National Armory Bright barrel has been sleeved for use with .50-70 ammunition, retaining an eagle head proof and partial "65" date at the breech. Bayonet lug front sight and musket rear sight. Breech block dated "1866" over an eagle head proof. Case hardened lock plate dated "1865" with standard Springfield markings. Stocked in walnut with iron mounts including 3 spring retained barrel bands, 2-piece trigger guard, and "US" marked butt plate. CONDITION: Fine. Metal components are especially fine. Barrel remains bright showing some light areas of patina forming. Breech block retains nearly all of its oil quench black. Lock plate likewise retains the vast majority of its case colors with some muting and silvering on the hammer. Stock has been refinished with cartouche illegible. Fine bore and mechanics. BAS
