Green lined amputation set with label of G. Tiemann & Co., 67 Chatham St., New York, dating it 1864 to 1886, though the oval shape of the label and pistol grip contour of the missing saw suggest a date early in that range, perhaps Civil War era. All the tools are in place, except for the saw. all are matching condition and have checkered ebony handled. Those marked bear Tiemann in Old English, one of their earlier styles. The tourniquet is steel and unmarked as is the pair of nippers, suggesting later additions. The metal is bright and unstained overall. The blue color on the base of the bone brush and the blue and gilt finish of the trephine are quite strong. CONDITION: The wood case is good, but with rubs and abrasion to the finish. The brass escutcheon plate is missing. The green fabric on the lid of the upper tray shows wear from the clasps, staining at the edges and impressions from the tools in the lower tray. A packet in the small compartment bears a Buffalo, New York, druggist's address. The lifting tab for that compartment is missing. It also contains a small gutta percha or hard rubber bottle. The tools and blades all show bright metal without staining.
