German "Saxon" Model 1845 "Faschinenmesser" in a unique leather frog. These blades were issued to Saxon troops in the 19th century to build fascines for defensive positions, to clear brush, and any other use as a machete. The blade ricasso is marked "HZ" and there are no other markings/ proofs. The blade was sharped at some point, has a number of dings/ small chips, and exhibits varying levels of freckling. The one piece solid brass hilt is marked "EK" and has patina throughout. The interesting feature on the M1845 is the absence of a brass throat on the scabbard, which instead has a brass hook attached, which is then secured to the frog via a leather strap and buckle. The scabbard and frog have moderate wear, crazing, and dry areas. The brass scabbard tip is secure with several tiny dings. CONDITION: Overall good. WEZ
