Octagonal transitioning to round barrel altered Trade Gun by Galton of Birmingham. Originally exported for trade to Indians around the time of the War of 1812, this example was most likely converted to percussion in the 1850s. Metal has turned a dark brown patina with scattered surface pitting. Wood is very worn with large slivers missing, especially on the fore stock and under the barrel. Barrel has been cut down with only one brass ramrod pipe remaining. Barrel is held on with a blacksmith made iron barrel band near the muzzle. Lock plate is stamped "GASTON" and under the bolster is a sitting fox within a circle just aft of a British broad arrow proof. Brass serpent side plate opposite lock plate. CONDITION: Hammer main spring is weak but functions. Bore is dark and dirty. BRM.
