Made in the Upper Susquehanna style circa 1820. 42" octagon .50 caliber rifled barrel with rifle sights and signed "H M" in script letters on top flat. James Golcher lock that was originally flint converted in the period to percussion with single trigger control. Full curly maple stock with brass hardware including a "Baum" style patchbox with 9 piercings, brass saddle plate, 2-piece entry pipe with rivet, and missing brass sideplate. Gun has 23 provisions for silver inlays with a moon cheekpiece inlay and Upper Susquehanna style teardrops and hearts; all missing except for barrel escutcheon plates. Cheek has brass inlay with rings for touch hole pick. Comes with original hardwood rod. CONDITION: Overall gun has a nice honest aged look with replaced tang screw. Wood shrinkage and burnout around lock. Gun has what looks like chew marks on comb and carry areas which consignor says is mice after salt damage (makes sense; it's in all the carry areas). Missing inlays with toe damage and a crack in front of the trigger guard. Dark pitted bore with visible rifling and functioning mechanics. A fine Upper Susquehanna that would make a great restoration project.
