A small but nicely mounted and documented British medal group named to Paymaster Sergeant William Holtaway, 52nd Regiment Of Light Infantry. The group consists of his Indian Mutiny Medal impressed in Roman capitals "PAYMR SERJT W, J, HOLTAWAY, 52ND L.I.". Original issue, as service numbers are not impressed on the original issue. The medal displays the Delhi clasp which is confirmed in the rolls. Holtaway's Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (Victoria version with scroll suspender) is also mounted and impressed in Roman capitals "1360. CLR-SJT W.J. HOLTAWAY. 52ND RGT". Muster rolls indicate that Holtaway enlisted in 1840 at the age of 18, was promoted to Corporal in April 1845, Serjeant on 23 September 1846, Color Serjeant 1 October 1846, and Paymaster Serjeant 31 May 1853. He died while with the regiment on 18 June 1860. The 52nd Regiment Of Light Infantry fought valiantly at Delhi losing 19 killed and 77 wounded out of 302 on the field. CONDITION: Medals exhibit a dark patina with light wear.
