A nicely mounted British medal group named to Farrier Quartermaster Sergeant Frederick Cowan, 16th Lancers. The medals consist of his Meritorious Service Medal impressed in narrow sans-serif capitals "FARR. Q.M.S. F. COWAN. 16-LRS.", Queen's South Africa Medal impressed in narrow sans-serif capitals "1283 S.Q.M.S: F. COWAN, 16TH LANCERS" with Paardeberg, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittenbergen, and Relief Of Kimberley clasps (all confirmed in rolls), and Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (Victoria version with scroll suspender) engraved in capitals "1283. FARR. Q:M: SGT. F. COWAN. 16/L'CRS". Cowan enlisted in 1874 and served abroad for nearly 13 years which included 11 years in India with 2 tours of duty, then a year in Africa. He was discharged in 1900 after spending 26 years and 18 days in the British Army. During that time he accumulated an impressive combat record and was tried and reduced for neglect of duty in 1885. He received his Long Service Medal in 1899. CONDITION: Medals exhibit a moderate gray patina with surface wear and scattered blemishes.
