Early American Hudson Valley Fowling piece, most likely made in New York or New England circa 1760 by an unknown maker. For a nearly identical example, see HV 19 on page 151 of "Flintlock Fowlers: The First Guns Made in America" by Tom Grinslade. Measures 70" overall with a 58 - 5/8" round .74 caliber smoothbore barrel with private London proofs and "(Star) / "IO" barrel maker's mark. Blade front sight. Unmarked scroll engraved imported lock plate. Curly maple full stock with fleur-de-lis design carved in relief behind the barrel tang, trigger guard tang, and ramrod entry ferrule. Massive 2 - 1/2" wide butt. The brass furniture includes a flat sideplate with beveled edges and single line engraved border. 4-stage buttplate tang engraved en suite. Faceted trigger guard with engraved geometric designs on bow and faceted tang and finial terminating at both ends in an arrow. CONDITION: Untouched and as-found condition throughout. Lock and barrel have a dark untouched patina. Lock functional and converted to percussion during its extended period of use. Brass retains a pleasing dark mustard patina. Stock retains its original surface with areas of handling wear. Period iron ramrod. One area of loss on left side, towards muzzle. A very attractive Hudson Valley Fowler.
