Regulation US 1833 pattern saber for enlisted dragoons. Congress re-established regular army mounted units only in 1833 with the First Regiment of Dragoons and the Second Regiment in 1836. The units played important parts in US westward expansion. Modeled on the British 1822 pattern. Standard 1833 pattern hilt, blade, and scabbard. Blade etched "United States" over a leafy branch on reverse. Obverse etched "NP Ames / Cutler / Springfield / 1837" near base of blade. Inspector stamp "WS" on quillon. CONDITION: Blade exhibits a gray patina with scattered freckling and blemishes. "United States" mark is faint. Light edge wear. Brass hilt exhibits a dark patina. Brown leather grip wrap intact with areas of cracking. Coiled wire binding complete and in place. Original leather blade pad. Scabbard complete with drag, rings, and throat, exhibiting a gray/chocolate patina.
