The Crimea Medal is a campaign medal that was issued to officers and men of British land and naval units who fought in the Crimean War of 1854–56 against Russia. Crimea Medals were issued unnamed but could be returned to the mint for naming. The returned medals were usually impressed with serif capitals, and this style is often termed and accepted as "officially impressed." This Crimea Medal is officially impressed in serif capitals to "J. McGEE 46TH REGT." McGee does not immediately show up in the records, however, the 46th (South Devonshire) Regiment of Foot was sent to Crimea in the summer of 1854 and saw action at the Battle of Alma in September 1854, the Battle of Balaclava in October 1854, the Battle of Inkerman in November 1854, and the Siege of Sebastopol in winter 1854. The medal features all 4 clasps that were awarded to the regiment. CONDITION: Light wear, good overall.
