The lot consists of 2 15th century Portuguese documents that were gifted to Dr. John K. Lattimer by the Viscount and the Viscountess Do Botelho from their family's archives. According to notes included with the documents (A) is an inquiry of H.M. Dom Joao II of Portugal dated December 22nd, 1941. The document is signed by Pedro Brandao, the Chancellor of the Realm (as was customary at the time), and has a 17th century paleographic reading in Portugese annexed. (B) is a letter of H.M. Dom Manuel I of Portugal in favor of Dom Martinho de Castello Branco, 1st Count of Vila Nova, dated January 18th, 1497. The King's signature shows scissor cuts, meaning that the document was made null and void in another generation. However, the King's signature is perfect and in full, according to accompanying notes. The documents are both contained in a red leather-wrapped folder which states they were gifted to Dr. John K. Lattimer, who was known to collect historic documents. There is a note glued inside that reads "To our friend Doctor John Kingsley Lattimer" and signed by the Viscount and Viscountess dated June 1971. The documents were stored folded in half. Both exhibit foxing and aging with some scattered blemishes, (A) has a large soiled spot. Writing remains legible with scattered areas of fading. CONDITION: Good.
