Made by Winchester Repeating Arms in 1891. Gun is marked on barrel in script block letters with "P.M.S.S. Co." which stands for "PACIFIC MAIL STEAM SHIP COMPANY". This company ran mail via Panama to New York from 1848 to 1949. Blued 28" octagon No. 3 barrel fitted with blade front sight and 22 G rear sight, marked with Winchester address and "44 W.C.F.". Case hardened solid frame action with plain trigger, case-hardened lever and hammer, and no top tang marking "PAT OCT 7th 79". Plain walnut standard stock with crescent steel buttplate. Matching factory plain walnut factory forearm with ebony inlay. Cody Research confirms all options, but does not mention of shipment to Pacific Mail Steamship Company. CONDITION: 90% original action finish with light handling marks, possibly cleaned long ago, and fading now to a silvery gray patina. Blue staring to wear to silver harder at carry points and near edges, wood has some light handling marks and having traces of original varnish. Forearm shows some old dings. Hammer and lever fading to a silvery patina. Frosted bore with visible rifling and good mechanics.
