28" octagonal barrel with dovetailed German silver blade front sight, dovetailed semi-buckhorn rear sight, and equipped with 3 ferrules that retain a wiping rod with sheet silver wrapped tip; a well-decorated acorn finial accents rearmost ferrule. Barrel is engraved with well-cut American scroll at the breech, accented by a pair of inlaid gold bands. The frame is decorated with relief oak leaves near the barrel, accented with floral engraving, with large vignettes of an eagle perched on a shield and surmounted by 13 stars; the left side with a bison surrounded by American scroll. The left side of the frame has "Wm W. MARTSON'S / PATENT / NEW YORK / 1850". Fishform hammer is engraved with scroll en suite. Loading lever in the form of a mighty serpent consuming a bird. Single set trigger. Birdseye maple stock with an inlaid brass star on shadowline cheekpiece, butt engraved en suite with the frame, and a spearpoint finial at the toe. CONDITION: Metal components are a smooth chocolate patina with flashes of dove grey throughout, primarily to frame. There are some minor handling marks, one very minor break at the right rear of the frame, and a minor crack at the left side of the wrist. Stocks have handling marks and dings throughout, including a chip at the left side of the wrist. Mechanically fine, the bore has strong rifling and a few minor pits. This is a very nice example of a scarce model from a well-respected maker, with some top-quality embellishment to boot.
