An interesting letter signed by the overall commander of the Confederate States Army, General Robert E. Lee. The letter is dated February 10th, 1864, and is quite intriguing, with content regarding the treatment of prisoners of war. In the letter, Lee thanks Reverend I.V. Moore and states that he is "extremely solicitous for the exchange of my Son...". Lee then goes on to discuss 2 federal officers who are being held as prisoners and states that they are not being held as hostages for Confederate officers who were executed by General Ambrose Burnside. Lee then goes on to discuss the etiquette of prisoner exchanges and paroling, which he hints has not been properly carried out by federal forces. The signature was authenticated and is accompanied by a James Spence Authentication Full Letter of Authenticity. The letter is former Dr. John K. Lattimer Collection. Fading and yellowing is exhibited, along with fold lines and browned edges. Despite the fading, the letter remains legible and comes with an older transcription. CONDITION: Fair.
