A nice group of medals including a Sampson Medal, Spanish Campaign Medal, and World War I Victory Medal with matching ribbon bard. The act of March 3, 1901, authorized the striking of bronze medals commemorating the naval engagements in the waters of the West Indies and on the shores of Cuba during the War with Spain. These medals were distributed to the officers and men of the Navy and Marine Corps who participated in West Indies naval operations from April 27th - August 14th, 1898. The obverse was designed by Charles E. Barber and shows a bust of Admiral William Sampson. The reverse was designed by George T. Morgan. At the top of the ribbon is a brooch pin with the name of the recipient's ship, USS Panther. The medal was issued for 47 engagements, and some were awarded with 6 or 7 engagement bars. This example is engraved on the rim to recipient "PETER REARDON MACH 1C" and features 1 Guantanamo engagement bar dated on reverse "June 11 12 13". The Spanish Campaign Medal recognized men of the U.S. military who had served in the Spanish–American War. There are 2 versions, 1 for the Army and 1 for the Navy and Marine Corps. This example is the Navy and Marine Corps version. Lastly, there is a World War I victory medal with transport clasp. The medals all exhibit a pleasing patina with intact ribbons, the WWI Victory Medal exhibits slight fraying. Ribbon bar exhibits obvious fraying but remains intact. A very nice group of medals tastefully mounted in a display case. CONDITION: Good.
