Pistols of a similar form have been recorded as dated circa 1590. Wheelock mechanism with an external V spring attaching to the wheel via a hinge and roller, similar to the mechanism of a tschinke. Lock engraved with floral scroll, and a single flower over the V spring box. 2 stage barrel, octagonal to round, with a pair of wedding rings at the girdle. Brass front sight with an escutcheon surrounding it. Puffer style mounts with bulbous butt and inlaid with bone throughout with decorative incise floral scroll, a shield with clovers, and topped by an amphora ahead of the trigger guard, an elaborate classical warrior on tang, relief carved, and side opposite lock with a dual-headed monster. Ramrod with bone tip is retained by a single faceted ferrule. CONDITION: Good, as assembled from a mixture of period and contemporary parts. Metal is essentially dove grey throughout with some areas of freckling and patina; engraving varies in quality and clarity as cut by different hands. Stock is very good with handling marks throughout, bone of different colors as of various ages; splices noted around monstrous head and a few cylinder spot repairs. Some inlays missing on butt. No spanner to test mechanism, bore is very good; touch hole rebushed.
