Unsigned circa 19th-century oil on canvas portrait of George Washington as President after Gilbert Stuart's (American, 1855-1828) well-known unfinished Athenaeum portrait. Stuart painted the Athenaeum portrait from life in 1796 and produced approximately 130 paintings based on this likeness, selling them for the grand sum of $100 each. Perhaps the most famous image of Washington, the portrait is featured on the $1 bill as well as various US postage. This early example after Stuart is presented in a period gilt gesso molded tombstone frame with lovely vine and fruit flourishes, as well as 15 stars, possibly for the 15 states in the Union prior to 1818. CONDITION: Fair. Surface has an age-darkened and crackled surface with a repaired puncture to the left of Washington. Frame displays a dulled bronze patina with some chipping and losses. Painting overall presents well but would benefit from restoration.
