Manufactured for martial use in the Civil War from 1861 to 1865 by the American Machine Works for agents Poultney and Trimble of Baltimore. Rust blued 21 - 5/8" half octagon barrel with German silver blade front sight and ladder rear sight. Case-hardened break action with brilliantly nitre blued latch, in addition to saddle ring and bar. Fit with a plain oil-finished walnut forend retained by a single blued band. Matching plain walnut stock with steel butt plate. Left side of stock stamped with sharp script "JH" (Joseph Hannis) and "LFR" (Lafayette F. Rogers) cartouches, the latter only working from 1864 to 1865. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrel retains 95% original blue. The frame likewise retains significant the vast majority of its strong case colors with a small area cleaned to patina. The vast majority of the brilliant polished blue is retained on several screws, the trigger guard, and the latch. Barrel band and saddle ring also retain significant traces of blue. Stocks are especially fine with some scattered impressions. Excellent bore, appears unfired. Crisp mechanics. A wonderful example of a classic Civil War carbine.
