For an example with a similar hilt and long brass ferrules on the grip, see Fig. 363 and 365 on pages 394 and 395 of "American Silver-Hilted, Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords: Volume II" by Daniel D. Hartzler. One with the same grip ferrules is documented in the book as being broken at Cowpens while in a sword fight with the infamous Tarlton, and owned by Lt. Col. William Washington. The slightly curved blade is of American manufacture and has a fuller on the right side only. 4 slot guard with pierced circles in center on each side of blade. Semi-basket hilt on right side with sweeping branches. Ball-shaped pommel and a maple grip with long brass ferrules at both ends. A very attractive, completely American-made sword. CONDITION: Blade retains a dark patina with scattered areas of pitting and some minor losses to cutting edge. Hilt retains a dark patina. Grip very good. A good American infantry officer's sword with a southern attribution.
