Jean Rainkin is not recorded in Stockel, but he does direct towards Jean Renkin, of which a number lived in Liege; given the configuration of the pistols, probably the Jean who worked circa 1766-1836. A true pair made in identical configuration and both numbered "40", with distinct duckbill muzzles, spring-loaded bayonets retained by sliding trigger guard, gooseneck cocks with a slot for a sliding safety, boxlocks with "Rainkin" on the left side with a floral drape, right with "Jean", also draped. Slab-side walnut bag grips with sparsely inlaid silver wire and checkered on spine. Accompanied by the original receipt when these pistols were purchased for $5,000, alongside other antique guns. CONDITION: Metal is essentially dove grey, with some areas brighter than others and showing evidence of heat, polishing, and scattered darkness. Engraving and legends are clear. Grips have handling marks throughout, including a crack and some deeper hits on pistol (B). Pistol (A) has a weld repair to trigger guard at rear. Sliding safeties have been reheated, (A) possibly replaced. Mechanically fine; bores are good.
