Matching serial numbers observed on right side of octagonal barrel, cylinder, and frame; matching assembly numbers observed on frame under sideplate, sideplate, cylinder. Cylinder with small Britsh proofs over each cylinder, top of octagonal barrel with "LEMAT & GIRARD'S PATENT LONDON", British proofs offset. Hammer has adjustable striker, functional. 2 piece walnut grips with checkered panels. Round trigger guard, fixed lanyard loop; faint remnants of what appears to be an "M" proof on left grip scale. Rammer replaced, probably sourced from a repro LeMat. These guns were used by all branches of the Confederacy and some even saw use among Union officers. CONDITION: Barrel has good evidence, 10-20%, of English high polish bluing, particularly in protected areas under rammer and trigger guard. Hammer is polished in-the-white, with handling marks and scratches throughout, and a few minor pits. Balance of metal is gunmetal grey mixed with chocolate patina, frame appears to have been touched up in the past with serial number softened. Grips are very good, with some abraded heads and handling marks. Bores are very good, rifled barrel has strong rifling. Mechanically fine, including hammer switch. A good example.
CORRECTION: The hammer is a replacement.
