A very nice example of a 1840's militia officer's sword made by Ames Mfg. Co. and is marked as such on the blade as well as the scabbard. The sword features a double-edged blade decorated on each side for about half its length with wonderfully etched patriotic and foliate motifs. The obverse features foliate scrolls that flank a panoply of arms and the Ames maker mark, which is contained in an etched scroll that reads "N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield". The reverse features a federal eagle with more foliate scrolls consisting of oak leaves and acorns. Blade remains bright with crisp etchings and very attractive appearance. Wide crossguard with 6-pointed star at center. Nice mother of pearl grip scales that exhibit a few cracks. Knight head pommel with chain guard. The hilt retains generous amounts of its original gilding. Complete with scabbard marked "N.P. AMES / MAKER / CABOTVILLE MASS. Scabbard features foliate mounts with elegant stud, also exhibiting generous amounts of its original gilding with scattered blemishes. A very attractive example of a militia officer's sword. CONDITION: Very good.
