Originally intended for the U.S. Military, the "Pinched Frame" sighting feature was abandoned by the U.S. Ordnance Department, as a result of a July 22, 1873 letter written by Ordnance Inspector, Captain J.R. Edie. Captain Edie recommended that an open flute on the revolver top strap offered a superior sighting picture. The total number of "Pinch Frames" manufactured is unknown, however, it is believed to be around 100 or less. These first-run single-action revolvers have unique features found only on their type. 7 - 1/2" barrel chambered in .45 Long Colt with single line script barrel address with correct serifs on either side, nickel silver blade front sight, and "pinched" frame rear sight; this last feature is unique to these guns. Correct ejector rod housing with bullseye ejector rod head and reinforcement stud. Frame is marked with correct 2-line patent marking with September 19, 1871 and July 2nd 1872 patent dates. Frame is also marked with a "U.S." stamping, however, no other martial markings are found on major parts. Upon further research, this gun is mentioned on page 462 of "A Study of the Colt Single Action Revolver" by Graham, Kopec, and Moore as being one of 3 known pinch frame revolvers with a US marking but no inspector marks (serial numbers 101, 111, and 162). These revolvers were thought to have been part of an order for extra pistols shipped to the Armory on February 11-18, 1874. These pistols are all marked in this manner, with US stamping and no inspector markings. Matching serial numbers observed on bottom of barrel near cylinder pin, side of cylinder, frame, trigger guard, and butt. Grips are matching serial numbered on inside of backstrap channel. Accompanying this gun is a folder with extensive research, including xrays from the Phoenix National Laboratories, Inc., to prove that this revolver has not been welded or modified, and provenance from several publications and photos of other known examples. PROVENANCE: From the advanced collection of the esteemed and respected Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Good, with finishes worn to a gray patina with sharp, legible markings and scattered age-related freckling and handling marks. Grips are well worn, with a cattle brand cut into right grip panel. Mechanically fine. Bore is frosted with appropriate wear to rifling and minor abrasion toward muzzle. A highly desirable revolver that would be the centerpiece of any Colt collection.
