Received in the Winchester warehouse August 22, 1874 and shipped out the same day. Standard carbine length 20" round barrel chambered in .44-40 with full-length magazine tube, blade front sight, and 2-leaf rear. The first model receiver features the earliest style of finely checkered, raised thumbprint dust cover as well as a saddle ring. Raised thumbprint dust covers were standard on guns below serial number 1600 but were not completely phased out of production until around serial number 2500. Fit with standard walnut forend and butt stock. Iron hardware, including a carbine trap butt plate retaining an original 3-piece cleaning rod in the tool compartment. Configuration is confirmed by a pair of 1986 and 2008 dated factory letters. PROVENANCE: From the advanced collection of the esteemed and respected Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Good. Metal components exhibit a silvery gray patina with some areas of darkening. Magazine tube cap and rear sight base appear to be replacements. Wood has been sanded with a few scattered bruises, fitting somewhat shy to metal. Strong bore displays well-defined rifling with some black powder abrasion. Mechanically fine.
