Only 4,021 produced from 1855 to 1857. This example is dated "1855" on tang and lock. Correct 12" National Army Bright .58 caliber barrel with 3-groove rifling and "V / P" eagle head proofs at the breech. Blade front sight and 3 position rear sight graduated to 400 yards. Percussion lock fit with Maynard tape priming device with standard "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" and federal eagle motif markings. 1-piece walnut stock stamped with a script "JS" cartouche. Mounts include a retained ramrod, brass nose cap, barrel band with sling swivel, 2-piece trigger guard, and butt cap with lanyard loop numbered "4". Pistol is accompanied by a correct walnut carbine stock with "US" marked brass butt plate and mount numbered "3". Additionally, 2 rolls of original Maynard tape primers are included, one still wrapped. PROVENANCE: From the advanced collection of the esteemed and respected Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Very fine. Barrel remains bright with some minor freckles. Brass displays an even, mellow golden patina throughout. Pistol stock is fine, with light impressions throughout and a small split near the rear lock screw. Shoulder stock is likewise fine, with a slightly lighter appearance and scattered impressions. Strong bore with some cleaned black powder oxidation. Mechanically fine. A very attractive example of a scarce and desirable martial arm.
