Retailer marked 1902 Luger Carbine. The barrel is marked "J. CANEDO / 611 RIVADAVIA, 611 BS.AIRES" This gun has the 3-position rear sight and a ramp front sight. Dished toggle with a grip safety. 2-piece checkered wood grips with a checkered panel for stock and a detachable rear stock with a horn butplate and sling swivels. It comes in a unique fold out leather case. Inside the case is an extra magazine, sling, oil bottle and cleaning rod. The case has a presentation plaque that reads "CORONEL / CARLOS SARMIENTO / RECUERDO DE M. VIDELA / 1909". Carlos Sarmiento was a significant Argentinian politician at the turn of the century. He graduated from the National Military College in 1880 as an artillery officer, and made colonel, serving as a professor at the Military College, the head of the Coastal Artillery Regiment, the head of the Third Artillery Regiment, and as a secretary to Luis Maria Campos, the Minister of War. He was involved in the fraudulent sale of land in the Chacabuco District of Buenos Aires, and, when exposed by Lucio Vicente Lopez, a reporter who was, incidentally, also the grandson of the man who wrote the Argentinian National Anthem, Sarmiento challenged Lopez to a duel, where he killed him, shooting Lopez in the abdomen; Sarmiento was not charged after a brief investigation. He retired from military life in 1905 in favor of politics, founding the Popular Party, and, in 1907, led a revolution against Governor Manuel Jose Godoy, which proved successful, with 16 men dead at the end. The Federal government, however, intervened, and Dr. Cornelio Moyano Gacitua stepped in and held an election, where Sarmiento was elected as a national senator, and, in 1908, officially elected governor. Sarmiento is regarded as a progressive, as he built public spaces such as the Parque de Mayo and the Palace of Courts, and completed a complete census of the population. CONDITION: This gun has been professionally restored at some point. But it was done a long time ago. The gun retains the majority of the reapplied blue finish along with the straw small parts. There is a small spot of pitting on the barrel just behind the front sight. There is high edge wear. The wood stocks and grips have been cleaned up. Bright and shiny bore with sharp lands and grooves.
