28" Skelp Damascus barrels with dovetail lump, a steel bead front sight on a flat, solid, unusually wide rib, engraved with "Stephen Grant 674 St James's Street, London" and "2", denoting original manufacture as one of a pair. Dressed at the breeches and rear of rib. Underside of barrels with "5224", "HW" for barrel maker, flats with modern British nitro proofs for a 20 gauge with 2 - 3/4" chambers, nominal 16.0 and 16.1 IBD, and marked "NOT FOR BALL"; small "2" on bottom of lump. Splinter forearm with Anson plunger release, point pattern checkering, and small, well-cut, acanthus scroll surrounding a shell motif on exterior iron. Matching serial number and "2" on inside of iron. Boxlock action with well-executed scrollwork, floral motif about the hinge pin, beaded fences, "STEPHEN GRANT" on either side, side lever, and engraved "PATENT" in a vacant oval on tang. "SAFE" inlaid in gold ahead of automatic safety tab. Water table with serial number, view and proof marks, and "2". Strikers with gas vents. Double triggers are protected by a flat bottom trigger guard with a long tang that runs all the way to pistol grip cap. Pistol grip walnut stock, with teardrops behind sidepanels, checkered in 2 panels about the wrist, and fit with a 1 - 1/2" walnut extension at rear. CONDITION: Very good as rehabilitated. Barrels retain virtually all of a later brown with Damascus pattern subdued somewhat, but still visible, some handling marks throughout, some silvering, with some silvering to high edges. Stocks have been similarly treated, carefully sanded and revarnished; checkering is somewhat softened by restoration, but free of cracks or chips. Trigger guard reblued, engraving somewhat softened, with minor marks. Action essentially gunmetal grey with flashes of case colors in protected areas and some marks from the field. Extension at butt is not fit perfectly and can catch on a nail. Mechanically fine, bores are clean with scattered pits throughout.
